The strongest image of the "Cholocate" building (completed in 2009) is its suspended above a typical Japanese provincial townscape tea-house. Contrasting in terms of life-style, materials and time flowing perception, the traditional bow-space raises the curtain on “another” Japan. ENG
The cherry blossom is over and spring is coming to its end. Yet, the next season is about to start. Summer is at the door, and the nature is changing its tender pinkish cherry tint into brilliant colors of green. ENG
The last weekend a new private house designed by an exceptional Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori was opened. The new building is located in a small provincial town near to Tokyo. Neighboring with typical Japanese one-family residential architecture, the newcomer comes to the fore. Different, shiny and apparently soft metallic façade catches the visitor’s eye. ENG
Tokyo is an ever-changing city. Perhaps the most emblematic example of non-preservation of architecture in Japan is the case of Nakagin Capsule Tower designed by Kisho Kurokawa in 1972. The building is one of the few examples realized in accord with the metabolist way of thinking. It is scheduled for demolition.

Details are probably the main aspect of Japanese culture that an European traveler might appreciate. A great attention to the smallest things makes Japan special. Chosenji is one of those spots of Tokyo where one might encounter incredible details and peculiar traditional elements of Japanese landscape: incuse metal roof decorations, natural-looking stone lanterns, last cherry petals carefully preserved all over the garden. To express the essence of Yamaha’s brand, Japan’s leading general musical instrument manufacturer, and materialize its architectural design, the basic themes of this architecture are set out to be “a building that exudes the feel of sound and music” and “the union of tradition and innovation”. IT

Tod’s by Toyo Ito in Omote-sando (completed in 2011) is a building in reinforced concrete. Yet, here the structural material plays not only the load bearing role. Perhaps above all, it is an aesthetic reflection of the famous zelkova trees: the symbol of the neighborhood. So the form of the structure reinterprets the pattern of the tree branches and, in meanwhile, makes the architecture structurally possible. By @NovozhilovaM ENG
What is the difference between doing an architectural model and a real house? Looking at the NA House, the overall impression is that it is exactly the same thing. Only the scale changes. From 1:100 – 1:50 the architect gradually arrives to 1:1. Every joint appears simple and intuitive just as on its smaller paper copy. ENG
Sunny Hills (completed in 2013) can be hardly called a building. At least in its conventional meaning. A building is suppose to have walls and windows. Sunny Hills does not have neither of them. The building appears as a mass of fresh wooden sticks with no clear beginning, with no clear end, with no clear perimeter. This wooden filter represent a thick, porous and soft transition that smoothly meditates inside and outside of the building. The absence of any clear boundary between indoor and outdoor space is a typical feature of Japanese traditional architecture, in this case re-proposed by Kengo Kuma in a new and bold way. ENG
Although built 11 years ago, Prada by Herzog and De Meuron remains one of the biggest architectural attractions of Tokyo. Steel structure and curved glass draw together a simple yet catchy pattern of the building facade. Completely transparent, the store does worth a visit. By @NovozhilovaM IT

Approaching to Sou Fujimoto’s Tokyo Apartment one does not notice the building. The front of the street is extremely heterogeneous in terms of both forms and colors, so that the view of the nascent piled white pitched volumes does jump to the eye. Perfectly in line with the context, the Tokyo Apartments slowly emerges.

Tokyo (the biggest metropolitan area of the world where around 33 millions people live) surprises with its silent and peaceful corners. Just behind the Nezu Shrine fences (first established in Sendagi around 1,900 years ago and transferred to Nezu in 1706), a visitor dives into a past epoch atmosphere. The sequence of red traditional Japanese gates torii draw a narrow human-scale pathway: a route of purification. The basic symbolic element repeated an infinite number of times offers an architectural experience mixing time and space into one single entity. By @NovozhilovaM |
