Originally the Great Buddha of Kamakura at Kotokuin temple was made of wood. Completed after ten years of continuous labor (in 1243) and soon after badly damaged by the Japanese harsh nature the monumental statue was substituted by a new one.
Originally the Great Buddha of Kamakura at Kotokuin temple was made of wood. Completed after ten years of continuous labor (in 1243) and soon after badly damaged by the Japanese harsh nature the monumental statue was substituted by a new one.
The new Big Amida Buddha (or Daibutsu) was crafted in 1252 from bronze. Yet, just as its wooden predecessor, originally it was not an outdoor work.
Yet, its hall was destroyed by a storm in 1334. Then it was rebuilt. It was damaged again by yet another storm in 1369. And then it was rebuilt again… The last building housing the statue was washed away in the tsunami of 1498. Since then, the Great Buddha has stood in the open air.
The scale is significant. Only the length of eye is about 1 meter. The circumference of its thumb is 0,85 meters. Imagine the rest… By @NovozhilovaM
