Shanghai is not an amalgam of West and East. Shanghai is an in-progress construction of new global forms. In Shanghai, only in rare cases some flashes of traditional architecture appear. Perhaps soon even those will be smashed away to give space for some big rather impersonal developments. Probably one can better grasp an idea of local fading tradition from some elusive colors transmitting ancient rich history and habitual shapes of Shanghai: its purple, golden, red, orange, bloody, fire colors are hidden everywhere.
