La Triennale di Milano museum has just opened a new exhibition “Arts & Foods” curated by the Italian Architect Italo Rota that merges food, design and architecture into one single journey dedicated to the history of food and food rituals. No doubt, one of the most intriguing works on display is the Bread House created in 2004 – 2006 by the Swiss-born and living in New York sculptor Urs Fischer.
His tiny house (500 x 400 x 500 cm) is literally cooked out of bread and bread crumbs, and supported and completed by wood, polyurethane foam, silicone, acrylic paint, tape, screws and rugs. The installation’s honest design leaves every single ingredient exposed.
The overall image of decaying bread structure, the strong and pleasant bread smell and at the same moment a fear of destruction evokes controversial sensation of dread and amusement. This installation is clearly a good hint provided by the artist on the theme of food, hospitality and consumption, coincidentally proper for the theme of the Universal Exhibition that has took off in Milan two weeks ago.
Expo’s motto “Feed the Planet, Energy for life” is in fact a very open and inviting dictum for artistic, aesthetic, functional and philosophic interpretations.
La Triennale exhibition and Urs Fischer’s work on show are the part of official Expo 2015 city events, and will stay open till November, 1. So don’t miss the chance to visit Milan and step inside of this evocative and sensational work of art... Read more & see all selected designs from Euroluce 2015 in my article on Inhabitat USA.
