The finger is the first and only sculpture of the famous New York based Italian artist exhibited in a public space. It is 11 meters height, and it is made of fine Carrara marble.
The sculpture was placed in piazza affari on the 25th of September 2010. And it was suppose to rest there for two weeks only. However, later Cattelan decided to donate his work to the city with an only condition: the finger was suppose to stay in piazza affari. After some doubts and polemics the “present” was finally accepted, so the finger is still there.
The official name of the work is L.O.V.E. that stands for Libertà (freedom), Odio (hate), Vendetta (revenge) and Eternità (eternity). Yet, is it looks more like an offensive and insulting gesture. Well, the place (the Italian stock exchange building) and the moment (the beginning of the economic crisis) do provide a hint on the message of the sculpture. Can you read between the lines?
